Embracing History and Luxury: An Interview with the General Manager of Kolbe Hotel Rome

Nestled at the foot of the Palatine Hill, Kolbe Hotel Rome stands as a symbol of historical elegance and modernity. This prestigious hotel, originally a 1625 building, has been transformed under the visionary leadership of Mr. Carlo Izzo into a testament to historical preservation and contemporary comfort. We sat down with Mr. Carlo Izzo, the General Manager of Kolbe Hotel Rome, to delve into the hotel’s distinctive fusion of history, hospitality, and exceptional service.

Luxury Lifestyle Awards: Mr. Izzo, your pivotal role in founding Kolbe Hotel Rome about 17 years ago is well-known. Could you share insights into your background and journey that led you to become the driving force behind this iconic establishment?

Carlo Izzo: Thank you for asking. I’ve been in the hotel business since 1970 and managed several hotels in Rome. With the increase of tourism in the 2000s my business partners and I started searching for other hotels to add to our portfolio. When we took over this company in 2005 it was a hotel for pilgrims with a basic layout. However, we noticed its potential and the amazing location in front of the Palatine Hill. A full renovation and restoration of the original features was completed during the years 2006 and 2007, especially present in the oldest part of the property. Here the characteristic ribbed arches dating back to the 17th century were brought back to their original splendour by removing the plaster from the original bricks. All common areas and rooms were renovated and completed with all modern comforts. It took a long time and hard work but we didn’t get discouraged and turned the property into the beautiful 4-star hotel that it is today.

LLA: Kolbe Hotel Rome has a fascinating history. Could you share some of the most interesting historical aspects of the hotel?

CI: The building that hosts the Kolbe Hotel Rome was developed in different phases over the years: the first, inner core dates back to 1625, while the other parts were built later, between the mid and late 1800s. In 1912, the property passed into the hands of the Collegio Serafico di San Francesco dei Frati Minori Conventuali, before being converted in the 1960s into a hostel for pilgrims, apart from a small part that remains a monastery.

The Hotel is named after Father Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest who lived and studied here when it was the International College of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. After his studies in philosophy and theology, Father Kolbe founded the Milizia dell’Immacolata, a work of devotion to the Virgin Maria. Having returned to Poland, he was deported to Auschwitz during the Nazi invasion, where he gave up his own life in exchange for that of another prisoner who had been condemned to death. For this heroic act, he was awarded sainthood in 1982 by Pope John Paul II. A chapel and a small museum in the Hotel are dedicated to Father Kolbe.

LLA: How does Kolbe Hotel Rome balance preserving its historical heritage with providing modern amenities?

CI: We decided to achieve a perfect blend between past and present, and thus the choice of modern furniture and modern art. In this way, our guests can experience the glorious past of Rome with its fascinating monuments and attractions, while enjoying the comfort of a modern hotel.

LLA: The Unique Al Palatino Garden Restaurant is a highlight of the hotel. What can guests expect from their dining experience here?

CI: The indoor spaces of our “Unique Al Palatino Garden Restaurant” also reflect our efforts to achieve a perfect blend between past and present. In all seasons guests can enjoy the wonderful Italian food and wines under the ancient, magnificently conserved vaults in an elegant and exclusive atmosphere. From spring to autumn our guests can enjoy the outdoor spaces of our magnificent courtyard garden to wind down at the end of the day, sipping a drink or enjoying a romantic dinner under the olive trees.

LLA: How does the hotel’s location enhance the guest experience, particularly with its proximity to the Palatine Hill?

CI: All around us, you can see the remains of the great Roman civilisation, such as the Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and the Palatine Hill where the history of Rome began more than 2777 years ago. The major sites of historical interest are within a short walking distance and of course the best way of discovering Rome is on foot, yet our strategic position is also close to transport options. I believe that Kolbe Hotel Rome is the perfect homebase for those who wish to visit this beautiful city.

LLA: Personalized service is a key aspect of Kolbe Hotel Rome. How does your team ensure each guest has a memorable experience?

CI: Needless to say, without our valuable staff members the hotel wouldn’t exist. We are proud of and grateful for the commitment of all our employees. High standards of hospitality and teamwork are the keys to offering great service.

LLA: As the leader of Kolbe Hotel Rome, how do you inspire and motivate your team to maintain the hotel’s high standards of service and hospitality excellence?

CI: The team that makes up the Kolbe Hotel Rome staff is made up of people of various nationalities and they all have the ambition of contributing to rebranding the Kolbe Hotel Rome as a “Unique Selling Proposition”. It’s teamwork that motivates our employees and makes guests staying at the Kolbe Hotel Rome happy.

LLA: What does winning the Luxury Lifestyle Award for Best Luxury Historical Hotel in Rome mean to you and your team?

CI: Personally, I am honored to receive such a wonderful award. It motivates us all to continue upholding our high standards while improving our services over the next years.

Conclusion: Kolbe Hotel Rome is more than just a place to stay; it’s a journey through history with all the comforts of modern luxury.
