It is an icy day and the woods enveloped by the snow to Ortisei of Val Gardena line the narrow road leading to Ortisei. The Dolomites in the background are a breath-taking spectacle. I admire them as I navigate the last few kilometers that separate me from the workshop of Judith Sotriffer, the artist who helped to revive the tradition of wooden dolls from Gardena. The work table is strewn with small busts, myriads of chisels, arms to be assembled, marionettes to be repaired, and small cylinders filed with pastel shades, the same ones they will infuse vitality into the inanimate figures living on the bench. On a self not far away, you can admire rocking horses, rabbits, and stylized devils, in addition to the famous dolls. I have a passion for games in my greensand at the age of fourteen I dedicated myself to becoming a sculptor.
